Window Repair & Replacement

Which Replacement Window Is Best for Your Home?

Compare window styles, glass, frames, installation needs, and association rules before deciding whether repair or replacement suits your Northern Virginia home.

Replacing your windows can be a substantial investment. Before choosing a replacement, it helps to ask whether the problem is with the whole window or just its glass or hardware. A sound frame can stay in place when the problem is limited to glass or hardware that the window accepts as a replacement. Our repair vs. replacement guide explains how to start that decision.

When replacement is the right approach, several questions help determine which window is best for your home. American Screen & Glass can assess the existing opening and discuss the choices with you.

Questions to answer before choosing a replacement window

What type of windows do you have now?

  • Are they double-hung, single-hung, sliding, or casement windows?
  • Are the frames made from wood, vinyl, or metal?
  • What color are the frames?
  • Does the replacement need Low-E matched to your other windows?
  • Do the windows have grids? If so, what pattern and color?

These details establish a starting point for appearance, operation, and fit. If only the glass needs replacing, the aim is to match the existing glass, with Low-E matched to your other windows.

What are the existing window openings like?

Look for unusual shapes or conditions that could affect installation. The exterior materials around the opening matter, as do nearby interior finishes. For example, check the surrounding tile before work begins on a window in a shower.

The condition of the frame and surrounding wood also affects the scope. Share photographs of damage or difficult access when you request an estimate so these details can be discussed.

What would you like the replacement windows to do differently?

Decide whether you want the same window type and frame material or a change. Think about how you use the windows every day:

  • Do you want to keep the existing grid pattern or have a more open view?
  • Would a full screen be more useful than a half screen when opening the upper sash of a double-hung window?
  • Which operating style will be easiest to use and clean?
  • How will the frame color and glass appearance fit with the rest of the home?

For a whole-window replacement project, discuss the available glass specifications and product choices with the estimator. Our replacement window service covers the assessment and options for your particular openings.

How long do you plan to live in the home?

Consider your plans for the property: staying in your home, renting it out, or preparing it for sale. Explain what you need from the project and which problems matter most. The estimator can then help you compare a practical repair with replacement where appropriate.

Does your homeowners or condominium association have requirements?

Check for restrictions on window color, style, glass, and grid patterns. Find out whether written approval is required before ordering. Custom windows should be specified with those requirements in mind.

What else should you ask before ordering?

  • Confirm the custom specifications. Replacement windows are ordered for the project, so dimensions and product details matter.
  • Ask about manufacturing and installation timing. Parts, production, and scheduling affect when work can be completed. Confirm expectations for your order rather than assuming immediate installation.
  • Ask about finishing work. Will interior or exterior paint need touching up? What maintenance will the finished installation require?
