Window Repair & Replacement

Can a Cracked Window Be Repaired?

Find out when cracked window or door glass can be replaced in the existing frame, how insulated glass is ordered, and which conditions need a closer assessment.

Three photographs show a residential window, a removed glass unit, and a technician working at the window.

Yes, when the existing frame is sound and designed to accept replacement glass: the damaged glass is replaced while the frame stays in place. The crack itself is not repaired. American Screen & Glass assesses whether the window or door can accept replacement glass and whether the surrounding frame is sound.

What happens when double-pane glass cracks?

Many Northern Virginia homes have double-pane insulated glass. Whether one pane or both panes are broken, the repair requires a new insulated glass unit: two panes of glass sealed together during manufacture.

The new unit is manufactured to the exact size of the existing opening. An estimator gathers the information needed for a written quote, including:

  • The dimensions and thickness of the glass unit.
  • The glass type and tint, with Low-E matched to your other windows.
  • The type, pattern, and color of any grids.
  • The window or door construction and whether it can be reglazed.
  • Access and the work needed to remove and install the glass safely.

Low-E is matched to your other windows. Tempered safety glass is specified where required by code for the location and application. Our glass options explains common glass terms.

When is glass-only replacement not an option?

Some windows and doors are not designed to be reglazed. Those assemblies require assessment for replacement of the sash, door slab, or larger unit.

Certain proprietary glass specifications or coatings can also make a matching replacement difficult to obtain. That calls for a closer assessment of available options; it should not be assumed that every cracked pane requires a whole new window. The condition of the frame and the way the glass is retained are part of the decision.

What about single-pane windows?

Single-pane windows and doors are found in older homes in Alexandria, Falls Church, Leesburg, and other Northern Virginia communities. Single panes are also found in some garage and basement windows.

The estimate considers the glass type and thickness, the window or door construction, and the installation work. Confirm stock availability and ordering requirements for the specific project, including tempered or patterned glass. That establishes the timing for the glass your opening needs.

Single-pane wood and storm-window repairs

We reglaze single-pane wood windows and replace glass in wood and aluminum storm windows. We assess any sash damage at the same time and confirm the work location and timing.

Keep clear of damaged glass

Keep people and pets away from unstable glass. Do not pull shards out of the frame or rely on tape to make it safe. We offer residential temporary securing subject to availability; this is not a 24/7 service.

You can send our itemized estimate to your insurer. You handle the claim directly; AS&G does not deal with the insurance company on your behalf.

Start with the damaged glass

The practical first step is an assessment of the affected opening. Our broken window glass service covers replacement glass for sound existing frames that accept new glass. If the frame has extensive damage as well, the repair vs. replacement guide explains the factors to consider.
