Can a Window Lock Be Repaired?

Learn why a window will not lock, how compatible replacement hardware restores operation, and how balances, cranks or frame alignment affect repairs.

Often it can, but the first step is finding out why the window will not lock. A missing or broken lock is one possibility. A window that no longer closes squarely needs its alignment checked, even when the lock itself is intact.

Window locks help keep a sash secured in its closed position. Whether you are staying in your home or preparing to sell it, the window should close and lock as intended.

Is the lock missing or broken?

When the lock is the damaged part, the repair requires a compatible replacement. The shape, mounting points, and mating keeper need to suit the window.

We can usually source compatible hardware for older or discontinued windows, subject to availability. Most parts are ordered after the first inspection, once we identify their size and type. We replace glass across window brands as well.

Could another problem be stopping the window from locking?

Check these other parts of the window before ordering a new lock:

  • Broken balances or jambliners. These help support a sash that moves up and down. A problem can affect how it operates and sits in the frame.
  • A broken casement crank. A sash that cannot close correctly can prevent the lock from engaging.
  • A window that is out of square. Movement in the opening can affect how the sash and frame align.
  • A bowed frame. Installation or fit problems can prevent the parts from meeting correctly.

Replacing the lock alone will not resolve these underlying conditions. The assessment should identify the cause before parts are ordered. Our window repair service includes balances, cranks, locks, and related operating hardware where compatible parts are available.

Does a window that will not lock need replacing?

A broken balance or crank can be repaired without replacing the whole window when compatible parts are available and the surrounding assembly is sound. A substantially bowed or distorted frame needs assessment for a broader solution. The condition of the opening and the availability of a practical repair determine the recommendation.

Our repair vs. replacement guide explains that decision. If assessment shows that the existing assembly cannot be repaired effectively, consider replacement windows.
