Sliding & French Glass Doors: Repair, Glass Replacement & New Doors

Many sliding glass doors can be repaired. We assess fogged or broken glass, worn rollers, damaged tracks and locks before recommending a new door. When replacement is appropriate, our technicians help you choose a door suited to the opening.

Repair or replace your patio door?

Repair it when the frame is straight and dry and the problem is the rollers, track, lock, handle or glass.

Replace it when the frame is bent or rotted, water is getting under the sill, or you want a different style or size.

Not sure? Send photos. We'll tell you which one makes sense. See repair vs. replacement.

Glass doors

Sliding doors that stick, drag or won't lock

A sliding door that's hard to open usually has worn rollers or a dirty or damaged track. A door that won't lock has usually dropped out of line as the rollers wore down. Both are repairs. Our technicians replace the rollers, set the door height, and repair or replace the lock and handle.

See our sliding glass door repair page for the full list of fixes, or read the sliding door repair guide to match the symptom to the part.

The rollers carry the whole door. Worn rollers and a dirty track are the most common reasons a slider drags. Replacing the rollers usually brings the door back to smooth.

Frequently asked questions

Can the glass in a sliding glass door be replaced?

Yes. We replace the sealed glass unit in your existing door panel and keep the frame and hardware. We confirm the appropriate safety glazing for the door and order it to the measured size of your panel.

Can you fix a foggy sliding glass door?

Yes, by replacing the fogged glass unit. Once the seal between the panes fails, the moisture can't be cleaned out, so the unit gets replaced. The frame stays, and it costs far less than a new door.

Can you replace French door glass?

Yes. We replace glass in suitable single and double French doors, including divided-lite panels, with the grid pattern matched. Some standard French-door glass sizes may be available from stock, allowing replacement within 24 hours. Contact us to check your size and availability.

Do you replace patio door glass with blinds between the glass?

Yes. When a unit with built-in blinds fogs or breaks, we order a matching replacement unit with blinds sealed between the panes. Send a photo of the blind controls with your estimate request.

Can you replace a sliding glass door without replacing the frame?

Many sliding doors can be repaired when the frame remains serviceable. We assess the glass, rollers, track or lock before recommending repair or replacement.

Do sliding glass doors need to be tempered?

We use tempered safety glass for sliding and French door replacements. Our technician confirms the specification for the particular opening and applicable safety-glazing requirements.

Do I need a permit to replace a patio door?

Permit requirements depend on the proposed replacement and any changes to the opening. We confirm the scope and applicable requirements before work proceeds.

How much does it cost to replace glass in a sliding glass door?

The price comes down to the size of the panel, grids or blinds between the glass, and Low-E matched to your other windows. Replacing the glass costs far less than a new door. Send photos for a free, itemized estimate.
