When you need glass replaced, a window or door repaired, or new screens, choosing a company starts with understanding the work your home actually needs.
The questions are practical: What can be repaired? What needs replacing? How much will the proposed work cost, and how long will it take? A useful estimate should help you answer those questions for the affected window, door, or screen.
Questions to ask a screen and glass company
Can the company explain the repair options?
Ask whether the existing frame can remain in place and which part has failed. Fogging between the panes calls for a new sealed glass unit. Torn screen mesh can be replaced in a sound frame. A window that will not stay open needs its balances checked before you consider a whole new window.
Our repair vs. replacement guide explains common starting points. A company should be able to relate its recommendation to the condition of your actual window or door.
Can you verify licensing and insurance for the work?
Ask for the company's current licensing and insurance information and check that it applies to the work being proposed. A familiar logo or a low price does not answer those questions by itself. Clear company details also help you know who is responsible for the estimate and installation.
Who will visit your home and complete the work?
Ask how estimators and installers identify themselves and how appointments are confirmed. Marked vehicles and company clothing can help you recognize a crew, but they are only part of the picture. You should also know how to contact the business if you have questions before or after the visit.
Does the team have experience with your particular problem?
Experience with a similar window, glass unit, or screen is useful. Ask the estimator to explain what needs measuring, what can remain in place, and which conditions affect the installation.
For hardware repairs, ask whether the part has been identified and whether a compatible replacement is available. Glass can be assessed across window brands, while older or discontinued locks, balances, and cranks require compatible parts whose availability needs to be checked.
Is the business established and reachable?
Ask where the business is located and how long it has been operating. A physical location and clear contact details give you a place to direct questions about your project. You can also ask to see examples of comparable completed work.
What should the estimate make clear?
- The item being repaired or replaced and the work included.
- The glass, hardware, screen, or other material being specified.
- Whether anything needs to be custom ordered.
- The expected manufacturing and scheduling process.
- Any finishing work that remains your responsibility.
If you are comparing estimates, compare the scope as well as the total. A quote for replacing one insulated glass unit is different from a quote for replacing the whole window.
